The collection presents Leo Tolstoy’s vivid accounts of the heroic defense of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. Written while the author himself served in the besieged city, the stories convey the brutal reality of combat—blood, suffering, and death—rather than romanticized battle scenes. Tolstoy was awarded the Order of Saint Anne and medals for his bravery, and the narratives were first published in the journal Sovremennik in 1855‑1856, cementing his reputation as a leading Russian writer. This 2020 edition also adds three early Tolstoy works—"The Blizzard", "Three Deaths" and "Polikushka"—offering a broader view of his formative period.
