In vivid and witty pages the author describes his turbulent youth, family life at Arkhangelskoye and in the capital's town houses, preparations for festivities, the décor of the estates, and the luxury that surrounded him from birth. The narrative then moves on to the revolution, the loss of the family fortune, flight abroad, and the hardships of exile shadowed by longing for the homeland.
