This story follows Ruby, a thirteen-year-old girl living in the Black Country town of Cradle Cross, a place steeped in superstition and defined by its canals and buttonmakers. Ruby dreams of escaping the industrial town for the sea. Her life takes a turn when Isa Fly, a stranger searching for her father's missing wife and daughter, arrives. Ruby, along with Captain Len, is captivated by Isa. However, Isa's presence stirs suspicion among the townsfolk, especially when Ruby introduces her to Truda Blick, the new owner of the local button factory.
