The book examines the German campaign in Norway, the first combinedβarms operation of army, air force and navy in military history. It shows how Norway became the Third Reichβs βunsinkable aircraft carrierβ and a base for Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine attacks on the Arctic convoys that delivered about half of the LendβLease supplies to the USSR, including the infamous PQβ17. Based on declassified archival documents, the study answers why the Scandinavian bridgehead allowed a rapid conquest of Norway, why German losses were oneβthird higher than those of the Allies, and why the 1941 Uβboat effort failed to stop Soviet supplies. The analysis also covers the limited impact of mine warfare and the repeated failures of surfaceβship actions such as those of the cruiser "Tirpitz".
