Before sending Galya to the remote town of Chernokamensk, her grandmother warns her of a daunting trial: the girl’s veins carry silver blood, and the island she must travel to will test her strength. In Chernokamensk Galya must protect herself and a group of orphaned children who are held by a cruel director of a children’s home located in an old manor. The winter that year is harsh, and the quiet provincial town is shaken by a series of inexplicable murders and an unprecedented wolf invasion. Local elders repeatedly chant “trouble is coming,” and the prophecy proves true as danger closes in on the protagonists.
