This book chronicles the life and demise of the Knights Templar, a unique spiritual-military order of the medieval West. Established around 1118–1119 by a group of knights returning from the Crusades, their initial mission was to protect the tomb of Christ in Jerusalem and the pilgrims visiting it. The order grew powerful, establishing a network of holdings across Christendom to collect donations and taxes for the Holy Land's defense, and bore a significant burden in its protection. The decline of the Crusades and the fall of the Latin states in the Holy Land eroded the order's material and ideological foundations. The Knights Templar ultimately fell in the early 14th century at the hands of King Philip IV of France. The order's history, the accusations leveled against it, and its tragic end have left a lasting impact on public consciousness, spawning myths and legends.
