The novel's protagonist is the author's grandfather, a nuclear physicist who lived most of his life in the Soviet Union. His existence in the Soviet empire shaped him into a representative of a special kind of person, described by Soviet writer Ilya Ehrenburg as 'the horrified.' The author attempts to comprehend the USSR of the 1970s-80s, an era whose assessment is only beginning today. For the main character, reality was a blend of a rich inner life and the daily struggle for normal existence amidst total deficit and the Iron Curtain.
