The father of the great artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci was the Florentine notary Ser Piero da Vinci. But who was his mother? Beyond her name, Caterina, little is known about her, and the history of her life is shrouded in mystery. This essay attempts to lift the veil on the origins of the enigmatic genius of the Renaissance. Based on an analysis of facts and evidence, the author proposes a hypothesis that the artist's mother might have been an Abkhazian or Circassian slave brought to Italy from the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus. The romantic relationship between the slave Caterina and the young, successful notary Ser Piero da Vinci resulted in the birth of a boy, Leonardo.
