This book analyzes the genesis and development of the iconography of 'The Great Neurosis' in French art during the latter half of the 19th century. The title refers to Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot's theory of hysteria, considered a peak and elusive stage of neurosis. Charcot's methods and the pursuit of new artistic iconography led to popular depictions of agitated, dangerous, and fatigued women experiencing nervous fits. French periodicals published numerous articles linking works by artists like O. Rodin, F. Rops, and A. de Toulouse-Lautrec to photographs and medical illustrations of 'hysterical bodies' from the SalpΓͺtriΓ¨re Hospital. This study comprehensively examines the penetration of neurotic gestures into French visual culture and their impact on new artistic images and movements.
