The collection presents three short stories that explore the first love of three different teenage girls. Each heroine struggles to claim her right to love and to stand out from others through her thoughts and actions, despite not fitting conventional standards of beauty. Katya from "Diary of Katya M." retreats into a private inner world to shield herself from external hostility, while another Katya in "Valentine's Day" actively resists superficiality and seeks her own sense of justice. Natasha, the protagonist of the title story, pursues her passions intensely, makes a grave mistake, and learns valuable lessons about human relationships. The book examines how love can ultimately enrich their lives.
