This detective story spans two crimes separated by a century and a half. In the past, a double murder of a noblewoman and her serf is investigated by the son of poet Alexander Pushkin. In the present, a wealthy official is mysteriously poisoned, with an investigation led by a crime reporter and a descendant of the original landowner. The novel explores the motives of the criminals and a potential link between the two eras.
