In St. Petersburg on April 2nd, 1879, an assassination attempt on Tsar Alexander II occurs in Palace Square. While the Tsar is unharmed, a young woman escapes unnoticed amidst the chaos. Russia is rife with revolutionaries, and this incident is one of many targeting the unpopular Tsar. Dr. Frederick Hadfield, connected to the Anglo-Russian elite, finds his detached perspective challenged when he meets the idealistic Anna Petrovna, leading him into a perilous double life.
