In the 25th novel of the Commissario Guido Brunetti series, the Venetian inspector is drawn into a case that may not be a crime. Fifteen years prior, a teenage girl suffered severe brain damage after falling into a canal. The only witness, an alcoholic, provided a fragmented account of seeing her thrown in by another man, but later could not recall the event. Now, the girl's grandmother asks Brunetti to investigate, despite the potential statute of limitations.
