In Trier, Germany's oldest city famed for its wine and Roman history, a man is discovered dead, his body inexplicably covered in fungal rot. Local authorities are overwhelmed, but Germany's procedural nature brings in Investigator Tobias Winter. His objective is a swift, low-risk resolution. Aided by the enthusiastic local officer Vanessa Sommer, Winter quickly connects the victim to a group of middle-aged men. He suspects they may have inadvertently reignited a conflict from centuries past. As the rot spreads, both literally and metaphorically, the suspect list expands, potentially involving individuals born before Frederick the Great.
