A generation after the events of The Long Earth, humanity has spread across the new worlds opened by Stepping. As fleets of airships connect the stepwise Americas, mankind shapes the Long Earth, and in turn, the Long Earth shapes mankind. A new 'America,' Valhalla, emerges a million steps from Datum Earth, restating core American values in a plentiful environment and growing restless under Datum government control. Meanwhile, the Long Earth is suffused by the song of the trolls, graceful hive-mind humanoids, who begin to react to humanity's thoughtless exploitation.
