The death of Barry Fairbrother in his early forties leaves the town of Pagford in shock. Pagford presents itself as an English idyll with its market square and ancient abbey, but beneath this facade, the town is rife with conflict. Divisions exist between the rich and poor, teenagers and their parents, and husbands and wives. The vacant seat on the parish council becomes the focal point for a significant town-wide dispute, leading to an election filled with passion and revelations.
