A period of calm has settled over Tatayara, but a bored Colonel von Spinne receives an unusual request. Industrialist Protasov, the town's first millionaire, reports strange occurrences within his home. He claims a life-sized mechanical monkey, capable of walking and talking, is escaping its closet and wandering the house. Fearing the toy might cause harm, Protasov asks the Colonel to stay with him for a few days to investigate the peculiar situation.
