Dina Rubina achieves a remarkable synthesis of three distinct genres: a captivating, almost gothic novel about dolls and puppeteers that bridges history and art; a family mystery; and a psychological drama tracing experiences from vivid childhood memories to old age. The narrative explores intense passions that shape the characters. The profound, multidimensional metaphor of the human and the doll, the puppeteer and the rebellious doll, or a person as a puppet in the hands of fate or the Creator, subject to familial inheritance, is examined from various angles without resorting to simplistic analogies. Rubina's literary skill in descriptive prose, both landscape and portraiture, is, as always, exceptional.
