The biography of Charlotte Corday sheds light on the tragic events of the French Revolution, where politics, ethics, and emotions intertwined. Aligning with the Girondins, Corday viewed the Jacobin leader Marat as the instigator of the civil war. In an attempt to save France at the cost of her own life, she assassinated Marat. However, her action led to an intensification of the Terror, though Corday herself became a symbol of resistance against tyranny and civic courage. Her story raises the eternal question about the boundaries of what is permissible in the struggle between good and evil.
