This monograph examines the activities of Russian history departments at Moscow and St. Petersburg Universities during the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The study aims to define the contributions of scholars to the enrichment of historical sources, themes, and concepts. The author addresses the issue of generational change in academia through a comparative analysis of the contemporaries of the "great reforms," the "seventies generation," and scholars from the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. The research culminates in a periodization of the domestic historical process and the positioning of researchers within the prevailing scientific trends and schools of the era.
