В 1988 году в Дальневосточной высшей школе МВД произошло чрезвычайное происшествие, ставшее основой для этой истории. Один из слушателей, молодой человек тувинской национальности, оказался вовлечен в любовную связь с местной девушкой-якуткой. По обычаям их народов, ребенок от родителей разных национальностей мог считаться незаконнорожденным. Виктор Воронов, слушатель той же школы, был вызван для помощи своему однокурснику в урегулировании отношений с семьей девушки. В ходе разбирательств выясняется, что младенца похитили, требуя выкуп. Воронов начинает расследование, подозревая, что мать скрывает важную информацию, а странные предметы, оставленные похитителями, указывают на нечто большее.

Based on real events from 1988, this story unfolds at the Far Eastern Higher School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. A student of Tuvan nationality is involved in a relationship with a local Yakut girl, a union that could lead to their child being considered illegitimate according to tribal customs. Victor Voronov, another student at the school, is called upon to help his classmate resolve the situation with the girl's angered relatives. During the confrontation, it is discovered that the infant has been kidnapped and a ransom is demanded. Voronov senses the young mother is withholding information, and peculiar items left at the crime scene by the abductors pique his investigative instincts.
