Photographer Rinko Kawauchi launched her career in 2001 with the simultaneous publication of three remarkable photobooks – Utatane, Hanabi, and Hanako – immediately establishing herself as one of the most innovative newcomers to contemporary photography, not just in Japan, but globally. Following this, she published other notable monographs, including Aila, The Eyes, the Ear, and Semear. Illuminance marks a significant milestone, being the first volume of Kawauchi’s work published outside of Japan, celebrating ten years since her emergence on the international stage. Kawauchi’s photography is frequently lauded for its nuanced palette, offhand compositional mastery, and ability to inspire wonder through careful attention to small gestures and the incidental details of everyday life. This gorgeously produced clothbound volume with Japanese binding features previously unpublished images and was nominated for the Deutsche Börse Prize.
