Overview

"The Metamorphosis" is one of the few works by Kafka published during his lifetime. However, the novella truly became a cult classic only after the author's death: its imagery and motifs continue to inspire writers, directors, and musicians, and the phrase "Kafkaesque nightmare" has entered dictionaries. One day, ordinary traveling salesman Gregor Samsa wakes up to find he has transformed into an insect. He believes life will continue as before: he will keep working, supporting his family, and repaying his father's debts. But with each passing day, Gregor becomes a greater burden, his home turns into a cage, and his relatives become his judges. At the end of his life, Kafka bequeathed that his unpublished works be destroyed, but, contrary to the deceased author's wishes, his friend Max Brod preserved and published them. Kafka's texts laid the foundation for the literature of the absurd. In these unsettling stories, the fantastic intertwines with reality, and events unfold contrary to conventional logic. Kafka's works are complex to interpret and remain subjects of literary debate.
