In German-occupied Warsaw in 1941, fourteen-year-old Maria Florkowska dreams of becoming a world chess champion while training with her father and participating in the Polish Resistance. A critical mistake during a mission leads to her family's deportation to Auschwitz. The camp's deputy commandant, Karl Fritsch, discovers her chess prowess and forces her into deadly tournaments where defeat means execution. Maria fights daily for survival, aiming to escape and avenge her family.
