This monograph examines a pivotal period in the history of the Kingdom of Bohemia and early 17th-century Europe. It focuses on the struggle of the Protestant estates against the ruling Austrian dynasty to preserve their political and religious privileges. The conflict's culmination was the Bohemian Revolt of 1618-1620, which escalated into the Thirty Years' War, the century's largest military and political confrontation.
Based on a wide array of sources and recent scholarship, the study investigates the causes and nature of the crisis in relations between the Bohemian estates and the Habsburgs. It details the main stages of their opposition, which shaped the country's future for the next three centuries. Particular attention is given to the connection between events in Bohemia and the broader political and religious development of Europe at the time.
