Война застала девочку в деревне Печенево Калининской (теперь Псковской) области, где та проводила летние каникулы у родни. Практически сразу вся округа была оккупирована немецкими войсками, против которых борьбу развернули местные жители, организовавшие партизанские отряды. Со временем к партизанам присоединилась и Лара и стала активно участвововать в так называемой «рельсовой войне»: регулярно взрывала железнодорожные линии, мосты, пускала под откос фашистские эшелоны.
