In the 13th century, the Holy Savior monastery faces an onslaught from Bulgars and Cumans, whose ferocity and dark attributes rival modern fantasy creatures. Their leader, Shishman, wields a sinister lynx-skin hat that animates at his command. In response to the forces of evil, the church ascends above the earth through the prayers of all who sought refuge within. The narrative spans European history, touching upon the cunning of the Venetian Doge Dandolo, the Fourth Crusade's capture of Constantinople, and the fates of Serbian kings Dragutin and Milutin. The novel features a character akin to Woland, possessing a dried gourd from which darkness spills. Based on actual events, this work blends historical fantasy and philosophical novel elements.
