While contemporary manga may seem new, its roots in Japanese culture stretch back centuries. Traces of this art form can be found in seventh-century temple paintings, folding screens with comic characters, and medieval Emakimono scrolls. Modern manga comics echo these ancient themes and narrative forms, drawing from Japan's rich cultural heritage. This book chronicles manga's history and diversity, from Hokusai's 1814 work to the gekiga movement of the 1950s, Tezuka Osamu's Astro Boy, and Riyoko Ikedan's shojo manga. It covers samurai sagas, alternative productions from Garo, Mizuki Shigeru's demons, and Jiro Taniguchi's recent creations.
