The work "The Origin and Deeds of the Goths (Getica)" by the Roman historian Jordanes is one of the most significant works of the early European Middle Ages. It details the historical fate of the Goths, tracing their journey from Scandinavia to their settlement near the Vistula River. Jordanes describes their southward movement towards the Black Sea and subsequent westward expansion into Italy and Spain, where the kingdoms of the Visigoths and Ostrogoths were established. The text offers a grand panorama of the "Migration Period" of the 4th-5th centuries, chronicling tribal movements, conflicts with the Roman Empire, the invasion of Attila, and the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains.
