Nikolai Ivanovich Yezhov (1895β1940) served as Peopleβs Commissar of Internal Affairs and chief of Soviet state security, overseeing the most brutal phase of the Great Terror. From the summer of 1937 he coordinated mass arrests, executions and deportations targeting alleged antiβSoviet elements, spies, and party members, using extrajudicial bodies such as NKVD βtroikasβ and special meetings. According to the 1998 ruling of the Russian Supreme Courtβs Military Collegium, more than 1.5 million people fell victim to Yezhovβs directives, about half of them executed. This volume, part of the βAnatomy of the Secret Servicesβ series, presents a detailed, documentβbased portrait of Yezhovβs career and the mechanisms of Soviet repression.
