Nikolai Ivanovich Yezhov (1895–1940) served as People’s Commissar of Internal Affairs and chief of Soviet state security, overseeing the most brutal phase of the Great Terror. From the summer of 1937 he coordinated mass arrests, executions and deportations targeting alleged anti‑Soviet elements, spies, and party members, using extrajudicial bodies such as NKVD “troikas” and special meetings. According to the 1998 ruling of the Russian Supreme Court’s Military Collegium, more than 1.5 million people fell victim to Yezhov’s directives, about half of them executed.
