The book traces how peoples of the past imagined the night sky, beginning with Sumerian‑Babylonian astronomy that underlies modern star charts. It then examines the unique celestial images created by medieval travelers, focusing on the Vikings: whether they possessed a zodiac, which ancient ideas survived to the present, and how these beliefs intertwine with Eddic myths and sacred texts. The work also details how medieval Scandinavians used the stars for sea navigation. An appendix presents a Russian translation of O.Z. Reiter’s 1934 study “German Astronomy.” The volume is scholarly yet accessible for readers interested in cultural astronomy.
