Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa (1894-1984) was a distinguished Soviet physicist, engineer, and experimentalist, a Nobel laureate in Physics, and the founder of the Institute for Physical Problems. He combined the intuition of an experimental physicist with the pragmatism of a scientific organizer and independence in his dealings with authorities. Preferring written discussions, he left a vast legacy of reports, presentations, and notes on various issues, some of which are collected in this volume.
