Two years after a brutal murder in the capital, committed by a girl who was forbidden to pursue music, winter and a serial killer arrive in the provincial town of Everfort. Dr. Vernon, an exiled doctor, begins an investigation, trying to find a connection between the victims: a prostitute, a newspaper editor, and a pie delivery woman. He is interested in what unites these people with the capital's crime, and whether the great musician Eric Stolz, whose identity turns out to be not what it seems, knows the answers.
