Valentin Logunov, known as a journalist and political commentator of the early 1990s, presents his first work of fiction in this collection. The title novella, "Prayer on the Rye Field," follows a six‑year‑old boy who survives the war and endures the post‑war famine that blackens his village and the surrounding black‑earth region. The volume also contains the stories "Love in the Work Settlement," "Magdalena on the Square of Three Stations," "Adam and the Apostle," "Mother Teresa of Chitinsk," and a series of pieces grouped under "He and She." Logunov occasionally touches on erotic themes, but does so without vulgarity, maintaining the literary tone of classic Russian prose.
