Alexander Pushkin, 2024, Series: Classics for Schoolchildren
Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, a renowned Russian poet, playwright, and prose writer, was hailed by contemporaries as the greatest national poet during his lifetime. The poem "The Bronze Horseman," written in 1833, tells the story of Eugene, a poor clerk in St. Petersburg, who loses his beloved during a flood. Driven to madness by grief, Eugene wanders the capital, blaming the Bronze Horsemanβthe monument to Peter I on the Nevaβfor all his misfortunes. "The Bronze Horseman" was initially published in a small excerpt during Pushkin's life, as Emperor Nicholas I demanded revisions that Pushkin refused. The complete poetic novella was first published posthumously in 1837. This collection also includes other major works by Alexander Pushkin, such as the poems "The Prisoner of the Caucasus" (1822) and "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai" (1824), which are part of the mandatory school curriculum, as well as his lyric poetry.
