In the years following the Yellowstone eruption, massive economic dislocation forces populations to flee Datum Earth for myriad Long Earth worlds. Sally, Joshua, and Lobsang are involved in this perilous work when Sally is contacted by her long-vanished father, Willis Linsay, the inventor of the original Stepper device. He proposes a voyage across Long Mars, but his true motive is to trace advanced alien technology to aid mankind's recovery.
Meanwhile, U.S. Navy Commander Maggie Kauffman leads an expedition to the outer limits of the far Long Earth.
