Ivan Melеж's 'People on the Marsh' is the opening novel of his epic 'Polesie Chronicle,' a profound philosophical and artistic reflection on the life of Belarus during the pivotal 1920s and 1930s. This lyrical novel introduces readers to the village of Kurany, where the lives and loves of the main characters unfold. Melеж himself referred to this work as a lyrical novel, and without reading 'People on the Marsh,' it is truly impossible to grasp the soul of the Belarusian people, their national character, dreams, and aspirations.
