В северных лесах появилось лихо — получеловек-полуволк, созданный неизвестным колдуном. Народ охвачен страхом, а между чародеями нарастает конфликт из-за подозрений в использовании запретных сил. Колдунья Ольжана покидает один двор, чтобы присоединиться к другому, но это приводит к беде: чудовище начинает преследовать её. Спасаясь, она находит убежище у лекаря из ордена охотников на ведьм. Вместе они пересекают страну, пытаясь уйти от погони, пока чародеи спорят, а лихо рыщет по болотам и полям. Ольжана осознает, что от чудовища не скрыться, и что его создатель стремился лишь посеять смуту.

A creature known as the Fiend—half-human, half-wolf, crafted by an unknown sorcerer—has appeared in the northern forests. Fear grips the populace, and discord brews among sorcerers, each seeking to accuse the other of using forbidden powers. Sorceress Olzhana leaves one magical court to join another, an act that brings her misfortune as the monster begins to hunt her. She finds refuge in the wagon of a healer from an order of witch hunters. Together, they traverse the land, hoping to escape their pursuer, while sorcerers argue and the Fiend roams the swamps and misty fields. Olzhana realizes she cannot escape the beast and that its creator's sole aim was to sow chaos.
