For the first time in Russian, this volume brings together ancient Greek texts that recount the legends of the historic city of Constantinople. The translations, spanning the 8th to 10th centuries, describe fantastical stories about the city’s abandoned buildings, mysterious statues, and the daring citizens who risked their lives to explore them. Readers travel through an imagined Constantinople, witnessing how Byzantines visualized palaces, baths, walls, towers, churches and monasteries, and glimpse the world of ancient gods and demons that lay behind the city’s façade. Compiled and translated by historian Andrei Vinogradov, the book offers a vivid portrait of the cultural and religious heart of the Christian capital.
