В 1913 году кассир крупного банка, финн Раутапяя, воспользовался удобным случаем, чтобы скрыться на родине. Используя подложные документы, он похитил почти триста тысяч рублей и направился в Гельсингфорс, где российская полиция была бессильна. На поиски воришки отправляется статский советник Лыков. Однако дело принимает неожиданный оборот: кассир найден убитым, а деньги бесследно пропали. Единственная зацепка — странная записка у трупа, которая превращает уголовное дело в политическое.

In 1913, Rautapaja, a bank cashier and native of Finland, seized an opportune moment to flee. Using forged documents, he stole nearly three hundred thousand rubles and headed for Helsingfors, where Russian police had no jurisdiction. Councillor Lykov is dispatched to find the thief. However, the case takes a sharp turn when the cashier is found murdered and the stolen money vanishes. A cryptic note found near the body becomes the only lead, transforming the criminal investigation into a political one.
