This book recounts the tragic story of the Italia airship expedition to the North Pole in 1928, led by Umberto Nobile. After successfully reaching the Pole, the airship crashed into the Arctic ice during its return journey. The surviving crew members found themselves in extreme conditions, awaiting rescue. This disaster triggered a large-scale international rescue operation, involving many countries, including the Soviet Union.
The author meticulously reconstructs the chronology of events, from the expedition's preparation to the rescue of the survivors. Particular attention is paid to analyzing the causes of the disaster, the role of weather conditions, and the technical aspects of the airship's design. The book describes the difficulties faced by the rescuers and the heroism of the expedition members.
Based on the accounts of expedition participants, investigation materials, and archival documents, the book allows the reader to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the Arctic expedition and appreciate the scale of the tragedy. Readers will learn about the contribution of the Soviet icebreaker Krasin to the rescue of the polar explorers, as well as the tragic fate of Roald Amundsen, who died during the search operation.
