The book presents a retrospective of the evolution of Soviet economic theory in the second half of the twentieth century through the lens of discursive analysis. The author shows that discussions about socialism in the 1950s and 1960s were conducted not only by economists but also by philosophers, and these largely forgotten debates had a significant influence on the speech practices of communist leaders, setting rather rigid boundaries for possible reforms of the Soviet economy. The work provides a critical examination of discussions around key concepts of socialism: public property, planned economy, value and commodity-money relations, the system of optimal functioning of the economy, and the Asiatic mode of production. The author argues that the cognitive impasse of the political economy of socialism in the 1970s was linked to logical contradictions in defining state property, which had been known since ancient times: the Asiatic mode of production, with which some Marxists identified socialism, preceded capitalism rather than replaced it. The wide range of views among Soviet and foreign historians on the causes of the USSR's collapse leaves open the question of possible interpretations of the outcomes of the socialist experiment in Russia.
