Jim Butcher
The First Aleran Legion, led by Tavi Calderon, has served as a shield for two years, preventing the beast-like canim from advancing. During this time, the enemy army has become more skilled, and many former slaves, now free thanks to the canim, have joined their ranks, ready to fight their former masters to the death. Tavi discovers that the canim are themselves victims, displaced from their homeland by a more ferocious race. This realization forces a difficult choice: forge an alliance with the canim against a common foe. However, Senator Arnos, Tavi's superior, desires only the eradication of the canim "plague" and the destruction of any Alerans found in enemy-occupied territory.
