Roman Shmarakov, 2025
In 1268, a sudden invasion of starlings makes movement through an Italian town impossible. Following the example of the characters in the famous "Decameron," who sought refuge from a plague, two monks and a young icon painter remain in their monastery. There, they entertain each other with stories and anecdotes, discussing the birds that have darkened the sky for days. They ponder whether this is an omen and, if so, whether it portends good or ill. Their conversations shift from omens to dreams and other signs, from portents to tragedy and other performances meant for human pleasure and edification, and from performances to history and tales, both instructive, sad, and amusing.
