In 2008, cultural theorist Vladimir Paperny and film critic Maya Turovskaya launched a joint project comparing Soviet and American cinema of the 1930s and 1940s. Following Turovskaya's passing, Paperny continued the research, extending the scope to the Thaw era. The comparative study revealed striking parallels in plots, cultural mythologies, and even shot composition between the two cinematic traditions. By juxtaposing films like "The Wizard of Oz" with "Cinderella," or "Meeting on the Elbe" with "Berlin Express," the authors offer insights into how similar social processes in both countries generated contrasting ideological messages within their respective films. This work blends serious cultural analysis of US and USSR cinema within a dramatic historical period with personal recollections of Paperny and Turovskaya's collaboration.
