Jean Savan, 2024
This book by French historian Jean Savan explores the history of the military-service class that guarded the borders of the Russian Empire and contributed to its statehood. The author traces the centuries-long journey of the Cossacks, from their origins in free communities to their service in the elite regiments of the Russian Imperial Army. It details the establishment of eleven Cossack hosts that participated in military campaigns, the conquest of Siberia, and the development of lands in the Russian Far East.
Drawing on ethnographic research, Professor Savan discusses the distinctive physical characteristics of Cossacks and their female counterparts from the Don, Caucasus, Urals, Transbaikalia, and other regions. The study examines the traditions and customs of these free people, who preserved not only the memory of military glory but also their unique creative heritage.
