This book examines the development of the Baltic lands, now Latvia and Estonia, from the late 12th to the early 20th century. The author draws upon little-known historical documents and scholarly research. It highlights the significant role of German knights, nobility, and the church in establishing statehood in these regions. The work illustrates the influence of various powers that dominated the Baltics over different periods. Particular interest is given to the author's exploration of the Baltic Germans' stance towards the Russian Empire, especially after its victory in the Great Northern War and the reforms of Peter the Great.
