There are only 2 species of desman in the world: Russian and Pyrenean. The Russian desman is a contemporary of mammoths. The name "desman" comes from the old word "hukhat" (to smell sharply). Desmans always make the entrance to their burrows under water. Learn all about what desmans look like, where they live and what they eat, what they do, how they raise their young, who they are afraid of and who they are friends with.
