This book explores how the discovery of oil dramatically reshaped politics and society in the Middle East. It argues that oil-dependent economies cultivated a new type of citizen, the "hydrocarbon citizen," whose attitudes toward government and politics differ significantly from those in non-oil-producing nations. These citizens tend to perceive their governments as effective and responsive, while exhibiting skepticism towards democratization, viewing it as unstable and problematic.
