Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/98–1543) was a central figure of the Northern Renaissance, whose artistic journey spanned Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, and England. While maintaining a repertoire of religious works, he is primarily celebrated as one of Western art history's greatest portraitists. His keen observation was complemented by masterful draftsmanship and an exceptional ability to render detail, from the textures of opulent clothing to intricate ornamentation. Holbein skillfully blended Flemish realism, late medieval German composition, and Italian formal grandeur into his unique style.
